150ft Abseil raises over £9,000 for QEHB Charity

Sunday 6 September saw 29 plucky men and women drop 150ft from the Hilton Hotel, Birmingham, in order to support various funds that QEHB Charity supports.

Kelly Jackson, 26, who lost her leg in a 2013 road traffic accident, took the plunge in order to give back to all those who treated and supported her at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham through her traumatic injury: “I… am so grateful to the fantastic staff at the QE who looked after me. I have decided to challenge myself to complete the abseil and give back to everyone who has helped me.” Kelly has raised £1,150 for QEHB charity, the Katie Piper Foundation and LimbPower.

Another touching sight was to see eight members of one family abseil in memory of their relative, Rashpal, who passed sadly away. Initially, only Rashpal’s daughter, Syan Dulai, was signed up to do the abseil, however on the day another seven members of her family signed up when they arrived to support her. Mishka Somel, Sharondeep Narll, Mukhtyar Narle, Ranjit Nall, Nishum Somel, Gurpreet Singh Narle, and Mandeesh Narle all took the plunge in memory of their relative. Brave Mandeesh also took the drop despite it being her birthday!

The oldest person to take part in the abseil was Michael Richardson, 82, who is currently recovering from bowel cancer, while the youngest to take part was Alex Millicheap, who is just 16.

Josh Coope, the Maintenance Manager from the Hampton by Hilton Hotels also decided to take part and raise awareness and funds for such a worthy cause.

The abseil raised an incredible £9,696 for QEHB charity-supported funds. Sian Averill, Fundraising Officer, said: “I am incredibly grateful to all who took part and came to support Sunday’s abseil. It was a brilliant event to be a part of, and the amazing amount raised is the icing on the cake!”

QEHB Charity wants to give a huge thanks to the Hampton by Hilton Hotels, Rock and Ice abseil company, and Purelight Photography for making such an inspiring event come to fruition.
