Siblings take on 500km in May!

On Friday 8 January, Geoff Hackett was admitted to Good Hope Hospital after contracting Coronavirus. Geoff was critically ill and spent time at both Good Hope Hospital and the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham. Now his children are taking #5KMay to the next level, running a combined 500 kilometers over the month to raise money for University Hospitals Birmingham Charity!

In January, retired doctor, Geoff Hackett, unfortunately fell seriously ill with Covid-19. Geoff, who has previously worked at Good Hope Hospital and was a GP in Lichfield, was treated on critical care at both Good Hope Hospital and the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham (QEHB).

Following their Dad’s treatment, Nick, Dan and Jen wanted to give back to the ICU staff who cared so well for their Dad. Speaking on this, Nick said: “As well as looking after Dad, the staff at both hospitals kept our mum incredibly well informed throughout- so that she was able to keep his family and friends in the loop”.

Geoff spent seven weeks on the ICU, where he was in an induced coma and on a ventilator. He developed a meningoencephalitis and had a small bleed in his brain. These were incredibly challenging and worrying times for all the family. Miraculously, Geoff pulled through and is now recovering back at home. His progress over the last month has been incredible and he even has his eyes on a return to the golf course by the end of the year!
Nick said: “We know that we are the lucky ones, as many people have lost loved ones to Covid during the last twelve months. Without the expertise, dedication and heroic effort from all of the staff at both hospitals, our family may have lost a husband, father and grandfather. We owe a huge amount of thanks to those heroes that cared for him and will always be eternally grateful.”

To give back to the hospitals, the family are not only taking part in #5KMay for UHB Charity, but taking on the mammoth challenge of running 500 kilometers throughout the month of May!
Dan is an avid runner often goes out running long distances. Dan hopes to rack up a whopping 300 of the 500km for the team. For Nick and Jennie, this will definitely be a challenge but the family were all really keen to do something to give back to the hospitals who looked after their Dad. When Nick saw UHB Charity post about #5KMay on their website, he spoke to his brother and decided to not only take on this challenge, but take it to the next level and run a total of 500km between them!

The siblings have already done a combined distance of over 300km after just 17 days, and raised over £2,000. To support Nick, Jen and Dan in this amazing challenge, you can donate to their JustGiving page here.
