Balsall Common Lions Club raises money for the Haematology and Oncology Day Unit at Solihull Hospital.

The Lions raised an astonishing £900 for the Charity and have pledged to continue to help support their local hospital.

Balsall Common Lions Club host a quarterly quiz night held at The White Horse Pub. The quiz consists of eight difficult questions to get people’s minds racing whilst fundraising! The group have been keen supporters of Solihull Hospital Charity over the years. In the past the hospital has helped some of the members during their own cancer treatments, making their donation towards the Haematology and Oncology Day Unit close to their hearts.

The Haematology and Oncology Day Unit was opened at Solihull Hospital in 2018 following a successful £150,000 fundraising appeal. The unit was designed with patients’ needs in mind and offers a more peaceful and comfortable environment for patients to receive chemotherapy. The Lions wanted to help raise money for ‘added extras’ that are not funded by the NHS.

The money raised has helped to purchase a cooling cap, the cooling caps are worn during chemotherapy treatment to help preserve hair follicles. Hair loss is a common side effect from chemotherapy and can be a very distressing thing for both male and female patients, with the donation provided by The Lions, this will hopefully help to improve a patient’s confidence and wellbeing.

Rachel Learmonth, Fundraising Manager at Solihull Hospital Charity, said: “Well done to everyone at Balsall Common Lions Club that helped to make this event such a success. The money you have raised will make a significant impact on the lives of others in need of it most, on behalf of the Haematology and Oncology Day Unit I would like to say a huge thank you!”

Andy Pemberton, member of Balsall Common Lions club for over 25 years along with other members who helped to run the night have pledged to continue to fundraise for Solihull Hospital Charity. Andy said: “We were anxious to work within our community as many of our members have been treated at Solihull Hospital; therefore we saw it as a perfect fit to service the community. The total was raised over two quiz nights and well over 300 people attended!”
For their next event, the Lions would like to fundraise enough to fund for an Air Glove, costing approximately £1,000. The Air Glove is a warming system that helps staff to see veins easier when inserting cannulas, making it easier and less painful for the patient.
