Becky goes the extra mile for her dad!

Becky Powers is taking on an epic challenge this year to support UHB Charity and her dad. In her own words, Becky told us the reasons behind her challenge, “Last year my dad was sadly diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Having been diagnosed in August, he’s since undergone a major surgery at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham, battled three infections and navigated his way through five months of chemotherapy.

“I’ve decided to put myself through my own physical challenge in support - running 5km every day for the duration of his original 6 month treatment plan, a small matter of 168 days consecutive running.  As a family we wanted to give back to the hospital who has been caring for dad, this is our way of saying a big thank you for everything they have done for him. The fundraising challenge has also given us something positive to focus on as a family and provides a small distraction from everything that is going on. I can’t believe how generous everyone has been with their donations, I’ve had to increase my target! Friends and family have also left such lovely comments alongside their donations to my dad and I.  Reading through them really does boost both of our morale’s.

“My dad has chosen University Hospitals Birmingham (UHB) Charity to be the beneficiary of our fundraising. The charity supports patients, families and NHS staff across four hospitals in the West Midlands  - Queen Elizabeth, Heartlands, Good Hope and Solihull hospitals.  In particular, the money will go to UHB Charity's Liver Foundation UK which supports research conducted by the hospital’s liver unit, which is the largest of its kind in Europe. From looking at new treatments for chronic liver disease and cancer to pioneering transplant work, research enables staff to improve the quality and length of life of patients.”
