Countdown begins for city's biggest race

Kate Mansbridge and John Molesworth (3) This year’s half marathon is set to be the most successful yet, with many people from all walks of life swapping their slippers for trainers in preparation for the 13.1 mile-long run on the 18th October. Lorna Bickley is raising money for One Voice, a community singing group for adults with acquired brain injuries which is supported by QEHB Charity. As well as being a brilliant way to encourage social interaction, it is key in helping patients with acquired brain injuries gain confidence not just through singing but meeting others with shared experiences. This is the first time that Lorna has done a half marathon, so she knows that running 13.1 miles is going to be a huge challenge! She said: “I’m excited and nervous to be taking part in the half marathon this year. It’s definitely going to be a challenge but it will be worth it when I am able to help raise money to support patients who have suffered brain injury.” Tim Molitor & Rachael Barker Joining Lorna is Stefan Edmondson, Maxillofacial Prosthetist at the QE, who is raising money for the maxillofacial department at the QE, which supports patients undergoing re-constructive surgery. Umar Hussain, Clinical Research Project Assistant at the QE will also take part in the half marathon, dressed as the Charity’s mascot, Mr Bear. He said: “I wanted to the run in QEHB Charity’s bear costume to bring something different to the race and to help raise awareness of QEHB Charity. It will be an extra challenge as I will be running in a big costume, and it will also add a bit of fun to the event, for me and for other people. I’m raising money to fund research at the QE which is a vital part of improving care for patients, so I really hope people dig deep and support the cause, despite the amusing costume!” Laura Power, Senior Fundraiser at QEHB Charity, said: “We are thrilled to welcome Lorna, Stefan and Umar to the QEHB Charity half marathon team! “We are really grateful for their support and look forward to cheering them on to the finish line!” If you’d like to join the 13.1 mile challenge this year, you can sign up by visiting www.qehb.org/events.
