Fisher House fundraisers prepare for half marathon challenge

This weekend, Emma Hart and her partner Jim Wilson will be among the thousands of people taking on the SimplyHealth Great Birmingham Run around the streets of the second city.

Emma and Jim are both raising money for Fisher House, the home away from home for military patients and their families at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham.

This is the second half marathon that Emma is taking on, having run two years ago also in aid of Fisher House.

She said: “I’m a bit nervous about it, I had a bad ankle sprain last summer which hampered my training but I’m looking forward to getting around.”

Emma was inspired to raise money for Fisher House through her work with the Warwickshire & Birmingham Wing Air Cadets, and has raised funds for the home from home since 2010.

Emma, who works at University Hospitals Birmingham, said: “I wanted to do something to give back to those who have given up so much in the service of our country. Friends of mine have served in Afghanistan and have themselves spent months in hospital, so I know what an impact this has on them and their families.

“Having Fisher House at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham means that families can stay close to their loved ones whilst they’re receiving treatment. Working at University Hospitals Birmingham I often get to hear first-hand the great work that the team are doing.”

Emma is the Officer Commanding 495 Sutton Coldfield Squadron, and her Cadets will be amongst those handing out the finisher packs at the finish line of the half marathon. She said: “It will be a great day and it’s so special for the Cadets to be involved, I’m looking forward to the moment when I see them on the finish line!”

Roisin Mooney, Events Fundraising Officer at QEHB Charity, said: “Huge thanks go to Emma and Jim for fundraising for Fisher House. On behalf of everyone at the Charity I would like to wish them both the best of luck for the half marathon and I look forward to celebrating with them when they cross the finish line!”
