Generous guides get fundraising for Fisher House

A group of girl guides have done their unit proud by raising £194; enough money to fund a week-long stay for a family in Fisher House, the QEHB Charity’s ‘home away from home’ for injured soldiers and their relatives.

Sophie Jones, Verity Jones and Morgan Grice (pictured above) were joined by four other girls at Warwickshire County Cricket Club’s Community Open Day held in support of Fisher House, where they ran a gruelling military assault course and completed it an impressive 50 times each! Rather than taking a break between laps, the kind-hearted group from the Third Blackheath St Paul’s Guides joined QEHB Charity volunteers to help sell raffle tickets.

The group, which is made up of girls between the ages of 10 and 14, also held a quiz night at Guides to raise funds, inviting their friends and family members to join them and make up teams. Leaders Naomi Powell and Clair Mcgarr acted as question masters for the event, while fellow leaders Carole Gallant, Katrina Wainwright and Debby Brewer provided refreshment. First prize, a £25 gift voucher, was kindly donated by Asda in Oldbury.

Guide Leader Clair Mcgarr, who works as a specialist cancer nurse at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham, said: “The idea to support Fisher House came from a brainstorming exercise on 22 February, which is World Thinking Day; the day we celebrate guiding and think of others. The girls were asked to think of a good cause we could support – they wanted to help soldiers and their families so I suggested Fisher House. We are all so proud of the girls for their brilliant fundraising efforts.”

The total raised was an impressive £194, which will allow the family of a military patient to stay at Fisher House for a week while their loved one receives treatment at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham, which is the receiving hospital for all the UK’s injured or ill military personnel.

Laura Power, Fundraising Officer at QEHB Charity, said: “We are so pleased that the Third Blackheath St Paul’s Guides chose to support Fisher House, which provides a much-needed safe space for families going through a really hard time. The girls have done themselves, and the charity, proud – thank you everybody!”
