Happy Nurses’ Day!

Today, Thursday 12 May, we’re celebrating the hundreds of dedicated, hard-working and compassionate nurses who work at the QE every day to provide Birmingham’s patients with the best possible care.

Over the last year, we’ve seen nurses go over and above to fundraise for their patients, work with QEHB Charity to provide ‘added extras’ for wards, and share their incredible personal stories of resilience in order to raise awareness of the vital work undertaken at the hospital. Here are just a few of the highlights from the past year:

CDU nurses Cait and Lisa took to the boxing ring to raise money for their unit, generating an impressive £680 in donations.

Nursing staff from Ward 727 applied to QEHB Charity’s Sprinkle Some Magic scheme to buy games and activities for their ward, to entertain patients and aid cognitive recovery.

Ward Sister Claire Lynch’s patients on Ward 407 also benefitted, after Claire received funds from Sprinkle Some Magic to purchase games, a tablet and a DVD player.

Only last month, A&E nurse (and ex-QE patient) Kate Mansbridge shared with us the miraculous story of the car crash that changed her life.

We spoke to Senior Sister/Ward Manager Roberta Batchelor from Ward 302 about her experiences and work. Roberta won recognition in the Birmingham Mail’s Pride of Nursing Awards in 2015, and has been nominated again this year. She has worked at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham for 35 years, having started her career as a domestic.

When we asked what she enjoys most about the job, Roberta said: “The best part is caring for the patients. I’m a real advocate for patients, and I want to make sure they get the best possible care. I love my team here, and I love working for the Trust.

“It’s really rewarding hearing the feedback you get from patients in your care, knowing that you’ve made a difference to them. If I couldn’t make a difference, I wouldn’t be here.”

If you’ve received outstanding care from an individual or team at the hospital, don’t forget to nominate them in the Best in Care awards, funded by QEHB Charity. Nominate here.

If you work at the QE and want to find out more about our Sprinkle Some Magic scheme, please email Tina at tina.hales@uhb.nhs.uk or call 0121 371 4852.
