Hospital staff to climb over 11,000ft in aid of patients

A medical engineer at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham is set to complete a ‘three peaks challenge’ to raise money for patients at the hospital.

Lee Comins, a 30 year old from Birmingham, and his brother-in-law Alan Green, 35 and also from Birmingham, will climb not one but three mountains in 24 hours to raise money for patients at Birmingham’s QE.

The daring duo will start their journey in Scotland on Saturday 12th September as they prepare to tackle Ben Nevis, a colossal 4,409ft mountain. The pair will then head south to the Lake District climbing Scafell Pike, which stands at 3,209ft. They will complete their final ascent in Wales, as they trek 3,560ft to reach the top of Mount Snowdon, making a combined ascent of over 11,000 ft.

Lee said: “I have worked at the QE for 15 years in medical engineering. My job involves testing, maintaining and commissioning medical equipment throughout the Trust. I decided to raise money for the hospital charity because during my time at the QE I have been able to see how vital these funds are in aiding healthcare to all those who need it.

“The climb will start at midday at Ben Nevis. Al and I are really looking forward to the challenge and began training four months ago. It’s great to know the money we raise will directly support the patients I come across every day.”

Laura Power, Senior Fundraiser at QEHB Charity, said: “We are delighted that Lee and Alan have chosen to raise money for QEHB Charity.

“Their generous donation will help fund added extras for patients, from pizza nights for teenagers with cancer to slippers for elderly care patients, as well as vital research and cutting edge equipment.

“We wish them the best of luck for the challenge.”
