Nine fundraisers run for Neonatal Unit that saved baby’s life

Bethan and Tom Odey’s baby boy, Benjamin, was born 12 weeks early at Heartlands Hospital weighing only 3lbs 1oz and spent five weeks on the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, and now his family want to fundraise for the Unit that helped save his life.

Whilst on the Neonatal Unit at Heartlands Hospital, Benjamin was ventilated and then on oxygen for four weeks before having to learn to breathe on his own and how to feed.

Benjamin’s mum, Bethan, said: “He came home on 7 February 2018 and he is now a happy and healthy baby and this is all down to the dedication of the staff at Heartlands and Good Hope.

“We want to raise money for the Neonatal Unit at Heartlands Hospital who saved Ben’s life.”

The team have so far raised a huge £4,493!

Sabrina Hussaine, Fundraising Officer at Heartlands Hospital Charity, said: “A huge congratulations goes to everyone who took part in the half marathon to help raise funds for the Neonatal Unit at Heartlands that helped save Ben’s life!

“The team have raised an incredible amount of money which will go towards added extras on the Neonatal Unit for patients, families and the staff. Thank you to everyone who took part!”

Each year Good Hope Hospital and Heartlands Hospital care for thousands of babies who can be born up to four months early and weigh as little as one pound. Around one in ten newborn babies need the support of the neonatal units across Good Hope and Heartlands.

The hospital charity aims to support the unit in providing the most advanced medical equipment which goes over and above what the NHS can fund. Aiming to provide added extras for mothers, babies and their families, donations like this one really help us reach our goal of going over and above.
