Proud father takes on Velo to thank the staff at Heartlands Hospital for saving his son’s life!

Tony Mynett has decided to take on the gruelling Velo Birmingham & West Midlands 100 mile bike ride to help support Heartlands Hospital Charity. In his own words, Tony is ‘jumping in at the deep end” as he has “never really been much of a cyclist.”

Tony’s inspiration for fundraising for Heartlands Hospital Charity is very close to his heart. Tony will be tackling Velo to fund towards the world-class care and treatments that is offered at Heartlands Hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Tony said: “The Consultants, Doctors, Midwives Neonatal Nurses and support staff are all incredible! I can’t thank them enough for the care given to my wife Steph and son Oscar.”

“During the pregnancy, Steph was closely monitored by a specialist team, the Pre-term Prevention Clinic at the Antenatal Unit and had to stay on bed rest for 14 weeks, (10 weeks of which was spent on the ‘Cedar Ward’ within the Women’s Unit at Heartlands).
“At the time, we were uncertain if our baby would even make it to 24 weeks gestation. However, Oscar hung in there and was eventually born at 27 weeks gestation; he was three months early, weighing just a tiny 2lb 9oz. He was then taken to Intensive Care at the Neonatal Unit, where he spent a further three months in an incubator.”

Tony continued: “The entire journey was pretty scary as we had also experienced two losses before Oscar. Our first son, Alexander, was born at 19 weeks and sadly passed away shortly after birth. He will always have a special place in our hearts and we’re eternally grateful for all the love and support from our family and friends.
“We’re very lucky indeed to have Oscar in our lives and can’t say thank you enough to the whole team there for saving Oscar’s life. I’m pleased to say that he’s a happy and healthy boy and doing fantastically well! Please donate whatever you can to help me hit my target and help a great charity in making more success stories like ours! Much Love Tony, Steph and Oscar x”

Sian Averill, Fundraising Manager at Heartlands Hospital Charity said: “The Charity cannot thank Tony enough for taking on such an incredible challenge. Each and every donation will ensure that the best care and facilities will be available for our little patients, helping to give them the best start to their lives. Thank you and good luck with the training, Tony!”
