Raise money for patients with rare diseases

On Friday 23 September, join us as we wear our jeans to work and donate £1 to help raise funds for QEHB Charity’s Centre for Rare Diseases at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham and Genetics Disorders UK.

If you can't wear jeans to work, don’t worry, you can still take part! QEHB Charity team members will be on hand to give special ‘Jeans for Genes’ stickers to anyone who makes a donation but who is not able to wear their jeans to work, and will be stationed at the Charity atrium stand on Friday.

There are over 6,000 rare diseases classified in the UK. Of these, 80% have a genetic basis and, surprisingly, one in 17 of us will be affected by a rare disease in our lives.

QEHB Charity is teaming up with Genetic Disorders UK to encourage everyone to take part in Jeans for Genes Day on Friday 23 September and make a donation.

Funds raised from the day will be split between Genetic Disorders UK and the Centre for Rare Diseases at the QE.

The Centre for Rare Diseases is based within the new Institute of Translational Medicine which is dedicated to developing and implementing groundbreaking treatments, technologies and techniques to benefit patient care. It brings together multi-speciality and multi-disciplinary teams to deliver care of patients with rare diseases and provides highly-organised, one-stop clinics where patients can undergo pre-planned diagnostic tests and see all specialists and the multi-disciplinary team relevant to their care – all in one visit.

Justine Davy, Head of Fundraising at QEHB Charity, said: "We are looking forward to joining staff at the QE, as well as the wonderful community and corporate groups, and generous individuals, who will all be donning their best denim in aid of patients! We hope that everyone takes part, and don’t forget to send us your photos! We’d love to see you flaunting your best flares on Instagram, Facebook or Twitter."

To take part in Jeans for Genes day, simply wear your jeans to work and donate £1 to QEHB Charity.

Ways to donate:
  • Online – Donating online couldn’t be easier! Simply visit our JustGiving page and hit ‘donate’: www.justgiving.com/qehbcharity
  • At the hospital – Drop your coins into one of our collecting buckets, which will be with our volunteers, stationed at the QEHB Charity atrium stand in the QE, on Friday 23 Sep.
  • At the Charity office – If you are passing, why not pop up and say hello to the QEHB Charity team, and give your £1 to one of our Fundraising Officers? You can find us on the Fifth floor of Nuffield House, which is opposite the Heritage Building.
