Royal Navy & Royal Marines Charity awards grant to Fisher House

Royal Navy & Royal Marines Charity (RNRMC) has awarded a grant of an incredible £20,000 to fund the upkeep of Fisher House, the home away from home for military patients and their families at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham.

Fisher House is an eighteen bedroom property and provides free accommodation to patients and families, and whether they need to stay for one night, or for 18 months, they will receive a warm welcome during their time of need.

Alongside the spacious en-suite bedrooms, Fisher House has a large kitchen, communal dining facilities, a cinema room and garden, offering a home away from home for people of all ages. Fisher House has been designed to allow families to stay together, helping to maintain family relationships during testing times.

RNRMC is the principal charity of the Royal Navy and exists to support sailor, marines and their families for life. RNRMC funds projects and facilities to boost morale for those who are currently serving, as well as veterans and their families.

For the second time, RNRMC has granted £20,000 to fund the ongoing running of Fisher House, helping to maintain this vital source of support for Navy and Marine veterans.

Since opening in 2013, Fisher House has had over 4,000 visitors, amounting to over 23,000 nights of free accommodation for military patients and their families. Over the five years that Fisher House has been open, over 400 serving members of the Royal Navy and Royal Marines have visited, benefitting from the service that Fisher House provides.

Fisher House offers visitors the chance to meet other people and families who are in a similar situation, giving them the opportunity to receive emotional support and advice, and build friendships within the armed forces community.

Alongside the comfortable, homely facilities at Fisher House, residents can access support from SSAFA, the Armed Forces Charity, and the Defence Medical Welfare Service. These organisations have a base at Fisher House and can offer expert advice for service people and their families during their stay at the house.

Adrian Bell, CEO of The Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity, said: “As the national charity of the Royal Navy, the RNRMC recognises the demands place on not only those who serve, but also on their family members. We believe that while one person joins, the whole family serves.

"Fisher House is a unique facility which enables military families to be together and support one another when times are tough. We are very proud to continue our backing for this very special place and the vital service it provides.”

Justine Davy, Head of Fundraising at QEHB Charity, of which Fisher House UK is a part, said: “The Charity’s thanks go to RNRMC for its incredibly generous grant that will help us to keep providing the very best facilities for our visitors at Fisher House.

“Fisher House relies entirely on donations to keep open, and without the support of organisations such as RNRMC, this would not be possible.”
