Super scuba group sign up to swim for Fisher House

Fisher house pic1 On Sunday 15 November, a dedicated team of fundraisers will complete a sponsored swim and snorkel at Southam Leisure Centre in Warwickshire to raise funds in aid of military patients and their families. Members of Scuba Action Dive Group, led by Ray Kirton, will join Chris Drury, staff from Southam Leisure Centre including manager Martin Walters, teacher Mick Swan and students from North Leamington School, Flight Lieutenant Daryll Moreton with the Southam 2028 RAF Air Cadet Squadron, and other friends. Their goal is to swim a grand total of 1,781 lengths between the team, equal to the 27-mile distance from the leisure centre to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham, in order to raise money for Fisher House, the QE’s ‘home away from home’ for military patients and their families. This will not be the first time the group has whetted their appetite for aquatic altruism; last year’s sponsored swim, which was also in aid of Fisher House, raised more than £1,000. So in an effort to top their current record, this year the fundraisers are aiming to generate £2,000. The swim will take place between 1pm and 5.30pm and the organisers are now on the lookout for volunteers to join them on the day. They are asking for people to sign up to swim 30 lengths, or whatever they may be comfortable with, in contribution to the distance goal of 27 miles. The team is hoping for at least 60 swimmers of all abilities to join the fun and help raise funds! Ray Kirton, who is a retired professional scuba instructor and lives in Warwick, said: “Most of the team have family or friends serving or who have served in the military. Injured military personnel deserve all the help people can offer, to achieve a good quality of life and after giving so much for their country. “My scuba group also supports the ‘Veterans Disabled Scuba Project’ which has been a great success at Fisher House. The program helps veterans learn new sporting skills and progress positively in personal development, communication skills and teamwork.” Sian Averill, Fundraising Officer at QEHB Charity, added: “Following the success of last year’s sponsored swim, we’re really excited to have the support of Scuba Action and friends once again. With the leisure centre, the school and other members of the local area getting involved, this showcases community fundraising at its finest!” For more information or to sign up to the event please contact Southam Leisure Centre on 01926 817788 or Ray Kirton on 07969 423 585.
