Transplant patient holds ‘charity wax off’ in aid of hospital that saved her

A heart transplant patient hopes to raise hundreds for staff at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham who cared for her, by holding a ‘charity wax off’.

Sarah Codling, a 28 year old from Woodgate Valley, Birmingham, underwent emergency heart surgery at Birmingham’s QE in January after suffering Transposition of the Great Arteries (TGA), a congenital heart defect, since birth.

She said: “I was on the transplant list for three months but then became very poorly and was placed on the urgent list, having to stay in hospital until a heart became available.

“Luckily I didn’t have to wait long, and eight days later had the life-saving operation.

“The transplant team at the QE are amazing and took such good care of me. I decided to host a fundraising event to raise as much money as possible to support those who supported me. Thanks to them my eight year old son Jake has his mum back.”

The ‘wax off’ event will see 20 men sponsored to bravely go under the wax-strip, baring their hair in the name of charity. Sarah has also arranged a raffle offering generous prizes, including spray tans, haircuts, days out and shop vouchers. Professional Beauticians have also joined the cause, volunteering their time and equipment to help make the event a success.

The wax off will take place on Saturday 10th October at the Slug and Lettuce in Harborne, from 2-6pm.
