University Hospitals Birmingham Charity receives £182,000 from NHS Charities Together

University Hospitals Birmingham (UHB) Charity, the official charity supporting the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham, Heartlands Hospital, Good Hope Hospital and Solihull Hospitals has received £182,000 from NHS Charities Together, courtesy of the funds raised by Captain Tom Moore.

The funds will help UHB Charity to support its 20,000 members of staff and the patients that they are treating through its NHS Superheroes appeal, which was set up by the Charity at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Charity Chief Executive, Mike Hammond, said: “University Hospitals Birmingham Charity is delighted to have received this incredible sum of money through NHS Charities Together thanks to the outpouring of generosity shown by the public towards our NHS, inspired by Captain Tom.

“The funds will help us to do so much for our staff and patients at this difficult time. We will be using the funds to provide tablets for our patients across our hospitals so they can enjoy virtual visits with their families at a time when they cannot receive visitors to the hospital.

“The funds will also help us to provide radios and activity packs to keep our patients entertained whilst they are on the wards.

“Our staff are working incredibly hard under difficult circumstances. We have set up wellbeing hubs across our hospitals so that our NHS Superheroes have somewhere they can relax away from the ward. We have filled the hubs with drinks and snacks, purchased comfortable furniture, and provided games and activities to create a restful environment for our staff.

“We are committed to supporting our staff, and the funds will help us to provide mental health support to our nurses and doctors through mindfulness sessions, and funding new junior doctor wellbeing officers to work across our sites.”
