Sprinkle Some Magic

Sprinkle Some Magic

University Hospitals Birmingham Charity is re-launching its Sprinkle Some Magic scheme which allows wards and departments to apply for open funding for items that go over and above what the NHS can provide.

UHB Charity will be providing grants from £50 to £1,000 to help Sprinkle Some Magic across our hospitals.

You could put a smile on your patients’ faces with board games and activity packs or brighten up your ward with a refurb.

Over the years staff have chosen to spread joy across the hospitals in a manner of different ways.

Fiona and Sharon with the sensory kit

The Imaging Department's Dignity Champions, Sharon Harper and Fiona McKain, have worked hard to improve facilities within the department for patients with dementia. Sharon and Fiona applied to the Sprinkle Some Magic scheme for sensory boxes, containing items to relieve anxiety whilst vulnerable patients awaited their scan. These boxes have been placed in strategic areas of the department for patient use. Sharon told us, "We are already seeing a huge difference since we introduced these sensory boxes, our patients seem more relaxed and at ease whilst awaiting their scan. Thank you to UHB Charity for providing these, things like this really do help improve the patient experience."

Nicole Toghill, Epilepsy Clinical Nurse Specialist, was another staff member who applied to the Charity's Sprinkle Some Magic scheme. She used the opportunity to create a calming space for patients with learning difficulties, by bringing a projector to a new sensory room at the hospital. Nicole said: “I applied for funding after witnessing the distress of a young patient with a severe learning disability. Attending the clinic was a difficult experience for him and his family. I was already aware of the positive impact that sensory rooms can have with learning disability patients, so I knew we had to bring one to the hospital. Thanks to the Charity, the room has helped many patients, and the projector is especially engaging. Patients now positively interact with their surroundings.”

However you’d like to sprinkle some magic on your ward we’d love to hear from you.
