50 miles in 24 hours for NHS staff

James Perry is taking on an epic challenge, walking 50 miles over 24 hours to raise money for University Hospitals Birmingham Charity! James set an initial target of £250 but has already raised an incredible £1,500!

James said his motivations for raising money to support staff and patients at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham (QEHB) were two-fold: “My stepdad Bob was treated at the Critical Care unit at QEHB, he was treated with dignity and received the very best care from the team. He sadly passed away and I want to dedicate this challenge to him and the hard work and perseverance of the NHS staff that cared for him. Secondly, the pandemic has made me appreciate more than ever the incredible job NHS staff do everyday. I hope the money raised can go towards improving staff facilities as these incredible people deserve to be looked after and admired.”

James will be walking 50 miles along Birmingham’s canals on April 6 which also happens to be his birthday!  As he won’t be able to celebrate as normal this year, James has asked his family and friends to donate what they would spend on a birthday pint and raise money for a fantastic cause!

James said: “Due to lockdown, and frankly not having much to do other than go for a walk, I thought I might as well use it as a way to give back to the hospital which is close to my heart.”

James has been busy training and is raring to go! Sophie Westlake, Fundraising Assistant, said: “We wish James the best of luck with his fundraising challenge and hope he has a very happy birthday! Our thanks go to James and all his supporters who have raised an amazing amount in such a short space of time!”
