Alternative sports day to raise money for injured troops

A host of fun and sporty challenges will kick off the annual O.P.T Outdoor Physical Training Sports Day and Family Fun Day, as families, children, adults and athletes are invited to show their support for our military personnel.

Showing off their strength, speed, endurance and agility on a variety of fun and challenging trials, competitors will raise money to support Fisher House, a ‘home away from home’ for military patients and their families.

O.P.T was set up by Barny O’Neill and Clinton Slater in July 2012, and focuses on improving people’s fitness and strengthening minds. Members train more than 12 times a week whilst the classes focus on a range of endurance, muscle building and mind strengthening exercises for all fitness abilities.

The Sports Day event will take place on 19th July at Alcester RFC, and is open to all fitness abilities and ages. It will present a range of quirky challenges, including a tyre push, press up challenge, tug-of-war and an assault course.

Children will also be catered for with a mini assault course, face painting, ice cream and bouncy castle on offer.

A popular fundraising challenge that is set to return is the “Beat the Instructor” event, where people are invited to donate 20p to dish out punishments to the six O.P.T instructors.

Clinton Slater, Director of O.P.T and ex serving forces personnel, said: “We can’t wait for our annual Sports Day to get underway.

“Last year the event was a great success and proved popular among sports fanatics, children and families alike.

sports-day-3-480x360 “The events are designed to be fun and alternative to your regular sports day, and are open to people of all fitness abilities, so we really hope to see even more people attending this year, either partaking in the events themselves or cheering on those who are.

“This is a great opportunity to have a fun family day out whilst raising vital funds so that military patients can have their loved ones close by when they are being treated at hospital.”

Michael Tivey, Fundraising Officer at QEHB Charity, said: “We are incredibly grateful to Clinton and everyone at O.P.T for their continued support of QEHB Charity and Fisher House.

“Although families stay at the home for free, it costs QEHB Charity £25 per night to accommodate them.

“It is thanks to those like Clinton and the team at O.P.T that we are able to offer support to military patients and their families at a time when they need it most.”
