Brave nurse skydives in honour of ten friends who died of cancer

Jackie Rowland, a nurse at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham, has, unfortunately, lost ten of her friends due to cancer.

After Jackie’s friend, Emma, passed away aged 28 after contracting cancer and leaving behind her husband and baby son, nine more of Jackie’s friends have passed away from cancer.

Emma’s Mum is “full of praise” for the way that her daughter was nursed and looked after on the Young Person’s Unit when she was diagnosed.

Jackie decided that she would do the skydive for YPU in honour of her friends that had all passed away as most of them had either been treated on YPU or had a real love for young people.

The names of her friends were written on her QEHB Charity t-shirt that she wore during her jump, and she also released ten paper butterflies with the names of her friends on at around 5000ft.

In total, Jackie jumped 13,000ft and raised a huge £1,000 and counting in honour of all of her friends.

Sophie Carroll, Fundraising Officer for QEHB, said: "It is so sad that Jackie has lost ten of her friends due to cancer. A huge congratulations and thank you to her for skydiving for YPU and raising a massive amount of money, and awareness, that will provide 'added extras' for YPU patients, families and staff.
