Dom cycles 100 miles after double lung transplant

This year, Dom cycled 100 miles for the Heart and Lung Transplant Department at QEHB after receiving a double lung transplant in July 2014.

Dom had suffered with Cystic Fibrosis for some time before his transplant and was in need of the transplant to give him a second chance of life.

Talking about his care at the hospital, Dom said: “My care at QEHB has been second to none all the way from the referral for transplant listing, all the way through to the transplant.

“Even now, as importantly, in my ongoing follow-up care for my life after transplant. The transplant team are great and the Intensive Care Unit were exceptional, post-surgery was challenging, but well handled.”

Dom has raised an incredible £565 for the Heart and Lung Transplant Department at the hospital which will allow the Charity to fund even more added extras for patients, staff and families on the department.

Dom spent five weeks in hospital after his transplant. He said: “It was my only chance of longer term survival with cystic fibrosis, given the state of my lungs after years of repeated infections and IV antibiotic treatment becoming increasingly less effective.”

Taking part in Velo Birmingham & Midlands 100 mile route and raising money for the hospital charity meant Dom could give something back to the hospital that saved his life. He also said: “I’m proud to wear the UHB colours in my fundraising for all of the great work the services provide to patients like me across the West Midlands and way beyond in many cases too!

“I have a soft spot for the QE as my late mum started her nursing there back in the 1950s, she’d have loved to know that the QE’s lung transplant team have done such a great job in giving me a ‘second life’!”

Justine Davy, Head of Fundraising at QEHB Charity, said: “A huge well done goes to Dom for completing the 100 mile bike ride back in May, especially after a double lung transplant!

“Thanks to the money you have raised we will be able to fund even more added extras for patients just like you on the Heart and Lung Transplant Department!”
