Dr Stockdale kindly donates profits from his book to UHB Charity

Dr Stockdale has kindly chosen to donate an incredible 100% of the proceeds from his book ‘Swimming with Hero’ to the Adele Francis Foundation, a part of UHB Charity.

The Adele Francis Foundation is a charitable trust established to support cancer research and to foster a research ethos within the treatment of breast cancer.  It was set up in Memory of Professor Adele Francis who sadly passed away in 2017. She leaves behind an incredible legacy of being the first female general surgeon at University Hospital Birmingham as well as a reputation for having a remarkable ability to think outside the box and was a passionate advocate for breast cancer research.

The book is an autobiography highlighting how, through extreme sporting endeavour and dedication, we can further fulfil our lives, transcend our apparent physical and mental limitations and realize our inherent ability to achieve the ‘impossible dream’.  The sporting narrative is set amidst the universal and inevitable peaks and troughs of daily life and candidly refers to the author’s personal regrets and his redemption after meeting Margaret, now his beloved wife and the Hero (ref ‘Leander and Hero’) of the title.  Margaret’s courageous story recounts the diagnosis and treatment of her breast cancer at the age of thirty eight and her exceptional sporting achievements that began just eighteen months after her initial diagnosis.

Dr Stockdale said: 'We owe the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham a tremendous debt for the wonderful treatment Margaret received, we can never repay them however this is my way to give back for all they have done for Margaret and myself."

We are hugely grateful to Dr Stockdale for generously donating the profits from his book to UHB Charity, if you would like to purchase one, please visit our online shop here.
