Duo journeys across India in aid of brain tumour patients

12473903_903012469806919_2142888144521105610_o Two plucky fundraisers are part-way through an epic 3,500km journey across India, in a rickety four-wheel motor described as a ‘glorified lawn mower’. Ben King and Reena Nathwini have teamed up with ‘The Adventurists’, a company that specialises in overseas fundraising challenges, to raise money for research into brain tumours at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham. The daring duo will complete the two-week ‘Rickshaw Run’, which began on 29th December in Cohin, South India, in just two days, ending the route over 2,175 miles from their starting point on 14th January in Jaisalmer, Rajasthan. The brave pair hopes to raise £3,000 for two Charities of their choice, which includes the Giles’ Trust fund at QEHB Charity. The fund was set up in 2015 to support research into brain tumours at the QE, after Stine Giles, England cricketer Ashley Giles’ wife, was diagnosed with a brain tumour at the Birmingham hospital. Using cutting-edge equipment that was funded by the hospital Charity, called ‘TomoTherapy’, Stine Giles made a full recovery and since set up the Giles’ Trust. Whilst travelling across India, the team has successfully completed a wide range of weird and whacky challenges set by the public, including persuading a local to shave off their moustache on camera! Michael Tivey, Fundraising Officer at QEHB Charity, said: “What a great way to raise money! We are extremely grateful to Ben and Reena for choosing to donate their hard-earned sponsorship to brain tumour research at QEHB Charity, which will make a huge difference to patients from across the West Midlands who come to the QE for cutting-edge brain surgery. We hope they have now seen the worst of the challenges and would like to wish them the best of luck for completing their epic challenge.” To date Ben and Reena have raised £1,217.
