Fundraiser runs her first ever marathon for QEHB Charity!

Earlier this year Hattie Mintz ran the Stratford-Upon-Avon Shakespeare Half Marathon. Despite this being her first ever running event she decided to take the plunge and run for Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham Charity to help raise awareness and fundraise towards our Prostate Cancer Appeal.

Prostate cancer as a whole is the most common form of cancer in men, with 47,000 new registrations each and every year. At Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham our Uro-Oncology team have world leading expertise in the field of men with advanced prostate cancer, led by Prof Nick James. As a Charity we aim to provide new and pioneering equipment for cancer treatments, develop research into clinical trials, promote earlier diagnosis and help to fund patient information and support for men that are undergoing treatments.

Hattie is currently a student studying for her PhD, researching prostate cancer at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham. As a PhD student and despite of her intense academic research Hattie decided to help raise money for the Prostate Cancer Appeal, she said: “I have had first-hand experience of just how much prostate cancer affects our boys and therefore we need to keep raising money!”

The PhD student took on the Half Marathon and “absolutely loved it” she said, Hattie completed the 13.1 mile run in 2 hours and 27 minutes, not stopping once! Overall Hattie raised an amazing £1,533.10p which will massively contribute to the Charity's appeal helping to launch our pilot “Man Van” project. The “Man Van” is an innovative way of reaching out to men that would otherwise ignore their symptoms. The van, kitted out with medical equipment is soon to start its first pilot and in the future will make visits to local workplaces within the community, raising awareness and potentially saving lives.

Cathryn Worth, Fundraising Manager for Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham said: “Thank you so much to Hattie, she has gone ‘over and above’ to raise money to support the patients at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham, taking on the challenge of running a marathon was certainly not an easy task, particularly having never done it before! Your proceeds will help to raise awareness of prostate cancer and change lives.”
