Extreme fitness challenge raises hundreds for patients
Physiotherapists Rhy Thomas and Jon Weblin’s gruelling fitness challenge has raised hundreds for Fisher House and QEHB Charity.
The ‘Lift for Heroes’ challenge event involved collectively lifting 287 tonnes; the approximate combined weight of the vehicles involved in transporting injured military personnel from Camp Bastion to the QE Hospital.
The challenge took place in the hospital Atrium in November 2014, and raised over £430 for Fisher House, a ‘home away from home’ for military patients and their families, and the physiotherapy department at the QE.
Jon, who works in Critical Care at the hospital, said: “As Physiotherapists, we spend a lot of our time advising the patients we see on a daily basis about exercise. Whether it’s during the early stages of their rehabilitation on Critical Care, or later down the line following surgery or injury in Outpatients, we thought it a fitting challenge to practice what we preach!”
Rhys added: “It was tough, but Fisher House, with support from QEHB Charity, do such a fantastic job in housing our military patients and their families during such difficult times in their lives that the struggle was definitely worth it.”
The fundraising duo were also awarded ‘Charity supporter of the year’ at the hospital’s annual Best in Care Awards, which took place in October 2014, and plan to continue their support for QEHB Charity throughout 2015.
Sian Averill, Fundraising Assistant at QEHB Charity, said: “I’d like to congratulate Rhys and Jon on raising such a wonderful amount at their latest fundraising event.
“We are very much looking forward to working with both Jon and Rhys throughout 2015, and value their continued support of QEHB Charity.”
