Family and friends fundraise for NETs

After Jane Amos’s husband was diagnosed with a neuroendocrine tumour three years ago, Jane and her friends wanted to fundraise for the department at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham to help them with their research and to thank them for looking after her husband.

Jane and ten of her friends and family all walked a huge 11 miles across the Lake District to help raise money for the NETs team at QEHB.

Jane said: “None of us have ever done anything like this before, it was a really good bonding experience and we wanted to raise money not just for NETS but for the staff too. The team at QEHB is fabulous.

“The weather during the walk was awful. At one point there was a river to cross but the bridge has blown down so we all had to wade through the river to get to the other side and finish the walk!”

The team managed to raise a huge £2,750 through their fundraising which will all go to helping the department and providing them with added extras that go over and above what the NHS can fund.

The NET Centre at QEHB manages over 1000 patients and uses specialist clinical knowledge from the hospital to treat complex patients on a case-by-case basis.  The Centre is working to find a cure, and improve treatments for everyone currently living with a NET or are yet to be diagnosed so all money raised helps towards future research into the tumours.

Sophie Carroll, Senior Fundraiser at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham Charity, said: “A huge well done goes to Jane and all of her friends and family that took part in the 11 mile walk and raised so much money for the NETS team.

“All of the money raised will go towards added extras for patients and staff in the department, and it will also help towards further research of neuroendocrine tumours.”
