Family make heartfelt donation to Ward 19

Megan Gardner and her family have raised money for Ward 19, the specialist cancer ward, at Heartlands Hospital following the care that her granddad received there.

Beloved grandfather Martin Gardner, who played football for Birmingham City and Aston Villa, was treated on Ward 19 following a cancer diagnosis in July 2018. After Martin passed away, the family decided to raise money for Ward 19, and raised a wonderful £355.

Megan, pictured above on the right, made the trip to Heartlands Hospital to present the cheque, alongside her mum Samantha Gardner and her cousin Lewis Corbett.

Megan said: “Granddad always spoke about how lovely the staff were on Ward 19, he always talked about how much he loved chatting to people on the ward and getting to know the staff. He said they always made the time to chat with him and they made his time there very peaceful.”

The money that the Gardner family raised will help Heartlands Hospital Charity fund the refurbishment of Ward 19, which will see the unit become a lighter and more comfortable place for the patients who are treated there.

Annabelle Davis, Fundraising Assistant at Heartlands Hospital Charity, said: “Our thanks go to Megan and her family for all of their fundraising efforts, the money that they have raised will help Heartlands Hospital Charity to renovate Ward 19, making the patient experience more comfortable.”
