Friends and family set to climb Mount Snowdon for renal department at QEHB

Lucia Hogg, her son, Jed, and their friends Christine and Freddy are set to climb Mount Snowdon this September to raise money for the renal department after Lucia received a kidney transplant.

Five years ago Lucia went into end stage renal failure and needed haemodialysis three days a week so she could stay alive, and in spring 2017, she received the phone call to say a match had been found and within 24 hours she had a new kidney.

Lucia’s son, Jed, named the new kidney ‘Betty’ and she has become part of the family.

Jed said: “My life was all messed up like a jigsaw puzzle when mum went onto dialysis but now she’s doing a lot better and I hope Betty keeps mum running.”

Sophie Carroll, Fundraising Officer at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Charity, said: “I am so happy that Lucia is back to full health after so long waiting for a kidney and being on dialysis.

“I think it’s amazing her, Jed and their friends have decided to climb up Mount Snowdon with the Charity in September to raise money for the renal department. I wish her, Jed, Christine and Freddy good luck as they prepare for their climb!”

By fundraising and spreading her story, Lucia hopes to make people aware of what life is like with renal failure as well as raising money to fund added extras for patients, families and staff at the hospital.

The four climbers have exceeded their target of £400 and have raised a huge £795 which will go towards equipment, research and facilities in the renal department.
