Fundraiser takes on marathon with a difference

Matthew Joiner, a self-confessed running hater, has pushed himself to the limit by taking on a marathon in the beautiful Belgian city of Liege. However, this was no ordinary marathon, it was a beer marathon!

Matthew took on the challenge in memory of his father, Doug, who was treated at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham. The run saw Matthew running round the streets of the Belgian city whilst making tactical stops to quench his thirst with Belgian beer along the way.

His efforts raised a fantastic £975 which will help QEHB Charity to support patients at the hospital. Matthew said: "We completed it in around five and a half hours and I reckon about an hour of that was spent standing around enjoying a drink! It was a fun event, with a Wild West theme and importantly it has raised lots of money to support the hospital where my dad was treated."

Fundraising Officer Sophie Carroll said: "Huge thanks go to Matthew for going 'over and above' to raise money to support patients here at QEHB. It certainly sounded like a unique event and I'm glad he managed to just about enjoy the marathon!"
