Generous brother and sister give back to Renal Unit at QEHB

The sister of man who donated a kidney to his wife has raised £7,000 for the Renal Unit at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham.

Nikki White’s sister-in-law, Sarah, went to the GP feeling more tired than usual and made the shocking discovery that her kidney function was only 12% and was in urgent need of a kidney transplant. Many noble friends stepped up and offered to donate a kidney and after rigorous testing Sarah’s husband, Andy, was found to be a match.

“We couldn’t believe it when we found out Andy was a match ‘husband donates kidney to wife’, how fantastic!”

Both Andy and Sarah have a made a full recovery, thanks to the life-saving treatment they received at QEHB. Now, the family have given back to the hospital by holding a Charity night to raise funds for the Renal Unit by auctioning off a rather unusual object- a Stormtrooper helmet!

The helmet, which is a signed collector’s piece is a cast from the original 1976 moulds and is one of the most accurate replicas of the on-screen Star Wars characters. On the night, other items were also on auction, including Manchester United tickets, tickets to see Harry Styles and Indian cooking lessons. As well as the auction there was live music and dancing.

“QEHB were amazing in every way and we wanted to thank them for the kindness they gave to our family, and to so many others. I was astonished by everyone’s generosity throughout my fundraising, and I can’t wait to do more events for the hospital that saved my sister-in-law’s life.”

Justine Davy, Head of Fundraising at QEHB Charity said: “It is always exciting to hear the new and novel ways that people fundraise for the Charity and humbling to hear people’s stories. Thank you to Nikki, Sarah and Andy for supporting the Charity, I look forward to continuing to work with you to support the Renal Unit at QEHB.”
