Grand Central hosts midnight experience in fight against breast cancer

To recognise October’s breast cancer awareness month, Grand Central, the city’s newest premium shopping and dining hub, will support breast cancer research at QEHB by playing host to a special fundraising midnight experience.

Around 1,000 supporters are expected to gather at the new shopping hub that sits above New Street Station, in a bid to raise money for Ladies Fighting Breast Cancer (LFBC) which fundraises to support breast cancer patients in the Midlands.

On Saturday 1 October, event participants will meet at Grand Central Birmingham at 11.30pm, to begin the 3K night-time fundraising walk beneath the shopping centre's pink lights.

Jonathan Cheetham, General Manager at Grand Central, said; “Whilst we are a shopping and dining hub, we’re still very much focused on our city and its communities. Ladies Fighting Breast Cancer has already had a massive impact on so many people, and we want to get behind that momentum by helping the charity to help more of those who, shockingly, are diagnosed with the disease every 10 minutes in the UK.

“We are proud to be a part of the midnight walk which will celebrate life, bringing the people of Birmingham together to join the fight, to ensure patients are getting the best possible treatment here in our city.”

LFBC was established in 2000 by Veronica Kumeta and the late Sue Macmaster, after their friend Carol Knaggs was diagnosed with breast cancer. Since launching the charity, it has already raised over £1 million which has kindly been donated to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham Charity, helping to create a ‘centre of excellence’ at QEHB.

In April of this year, a pink mobile mammogram trailer was set up in Kings Norton with the capability to test more than 62 women every day.

Veronica Kumeta, founder of Ladies Fighting Breast Cancer, said; “We are absolutely delighted that Grand Central has chosen to partner with Ladies Fighting Breast Cancer for this event.  We want to encourage anyone over the age of 16 to get involved and really help us to continue making a difference.

“This is the first midnight experience LFBC has ever done, which is why we want this event to be a celebration of life for those who are still with us and fighting today.”

Participants are asked to make a £20 donation to take part in the event, which will include a t-shirt and goody-bag.
