Grateful family donate to Ward 19

Ken Parkin has visited Ward 19 at Heartlands Hospital to hand over a cheque for £1,500 in memory of his wife Donna who was treated on the ward.

Ken and his daughter Harriet wanted to give something back to Ward 19 following the treatment that Donna received on the ward as she was treated for cancer from 2011 until her death this September. The money was raised thanks to loving family members and friends of Donna, Ken and Harriet.

Ken, pictured above with Dr Manos Nikolousis and Dr Shankar Paneesha, said: "The doctors and nurses fought very hard to help her and we wanted to recognise that by making a donation to Ward 19.

"The doctors and nurses all went over and above to help her, be it saving her life following a reaction to a platelet infusion, making birthday cards with her, or getting hold of a laptop so that Donna could get online to see her daughter's graduation ceremony at Nottingham Trent University.

"There was nothing that the staff wouldn't do for Donna, they were always there for a hug when she needed it and she became incredibly close to them during her time on the ward."

The money raised will go to fund 'added extras' over and above that which the NHS can fund, such as new equipment and services to improve care on the ward. Dr Manos Nikolousis, said: "On behalf of everyone on Ward 19, I would like to thank Harriet and Ken for all their hard work in raising such a wonderful amount of money.

"My colleagues and I remember Donna fondly and she touched the hearts of many on the ward during her time here. Thanks to her family and friends, she is leaving behind a legacy that will last long into the future."

Fundraising Manager at Heartlands Hospital Charity, Sian Averill, said: "The Charity is incredibly grateful to Ken, Harriet and their family and friends for raising so much for Ward 19. The Ward 19 charity fund enables the amazing team to purchase equipment that they wouldn't ordinarily be able to.

The kind donations the Charity receives are able to provide other support services that benefit the patients, their families and their carers. They quite simply enhance care and make a stay on Ward 19 more comfortable."
