Grateful patient raises £560 by tackling the gruelling Mount Snowdon

Couple Daniel and Nikki Jones, along with their daughter Katie have thanked staff at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham for the vital care that Dan received back in 2014 by walking the tallest mountain in England and Wales, Mount Snowdon, and raising £560 for the Liver Department at the hospital!

After the birth of their son Tom, Dan was rushed to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham with a suspected need for an emergency liver transplant. Dan received numerous tests and antiviral drips whilst waiting for a new liver match but to the doctor’s amazement, the antivirals began to work! With keen observation and a liver biopsy concluding that Dan had an extreme reaction to amoxicillin he had previously been prescribed before his stay at QEHB, he was able to go home.

Four years on, Dan and Nikki wanted to do something special to raise money for the hospital that saved Dan’s life. The couple live in North Wales and decided that it would be a great idea to climb Mount Snowdon, raising money for the Liver Department at the hospital. The couple were joined on the day by friends and family, including their eldest daughter Katie, aged 10.

Dan said: “It was a great day, the weather was absolutely horrible but we all managed to make it up to the top of Snowdon which was a fantastic feeling. I’m delighted to have raised so much money to support the work of the incredible team who looked after me so well back in 2014.”

Dan, Nikki and Katie made the trip from Wales down to present the cheque for £560 to the hospital, and made a trip to Ward 727 where Dan received his treatment. The kind-hearted family brought cakes with them to give to the staff to say thank you for the care that he received.

Nikki said: “Dan always said he wanted to give something back to the hospital and walking up Snowdon with friends and family is his way of raising money. It’s because of the hospital and support we had that he is here today and well again and able to even do the walk.”

Sophie Carroll, Fundraising Officer at QEHB Charity, said: “Huge congratulations go to Dan, Nikki, Katie and all of their family and friends for their excellent fundraising efforts. The money that they have raised will enable the Charity to continue to provide ‘added extras’ for liver patients at the hospital. The Charity is proud to support the work of the liver team at the hospital, as they undertake world class research here in Birmingham.”
