Injured soldiers star in new campaign

Three servicemen who were injured during active service have become the latest stars of a Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham Charity campaign.

Karl, Stuart and Dave feature in the short film ‘Home is…’ to raise awareness for the Birmingham based military home, Fisher House.

The short film reveals the battles the servicemen have faced and the journeys they have been on with their families from injury to recovery. Fisher House supported each of them during their recovery, by offering their families a home that was just yards away from the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham, and a support network during the most difficult time of their lives.

Dave, who was a Guardsman in 1st Battalion Scots Guards from North Yorkshire when he got injured, said: “All three of us wanted to be a part of this campaign to help raise awareness of the great work Fisher House does, but also to say thank you for the incredible care they have offered our loved ones.

“As a triple amputee my recovery is still on-going. Travelling from Yorkshire to Birmingham every time I have a hospital visit can be difficult, but having my family nearby at Fisher House during every operation gives me so much strength and a lot of peace of mind.”

Fisher House, which opened in 2013 and is now home to up to 700 military families every year, is funded completely by charitable donations. A spacious environment where families can relax or share experiences with other families in similar circumstances, a £25 donation enables a family to stay in Fisher House free of charge for a night.

Mike Hammond, Chief Executive at QEHB Charity, which runs Fisher House, said: “Karl, Stuart and Dave are a part of the Fisher House family and it’s very humbling to hear their stories come together for this campaign.

“Our hope is that the public will learn about the hugely positive impact Fisher House has on families. We want as many people as possible to dig deep to support the future of the facility.”

With 18 rooms accommodating up to 54 military family members, Fisher House UK has been designed to be a home from home. The state-of-the-art facility includes en-suite, kitchen and laundry facilities, as well as spacious dining & family rooms with children’s play areas.

Donations received will be used for the on-going running costs of Fisher House, which are in the region of £250,000 per year as the home continues to support military families through the many injuries and illnesses our servicemen face.
