Loyal Caledonian Corks raise £5,500 for ground breaking cancer equipment
Joanne Goodman and Richard Rudge of The Loyal Caledonian Corks club, based in Kings Heath, presented QEHB Charity with a cheque on Saturday night for a staggering £5,500 which they raised by holding various events such as raffles and fish and chip suppers.
The money raised will go towards a cutting-edge piece of equipment in the treatment of cancer.
The equipment, called a Laser Endomicroscopy machine, is the world’s smallest microscope to enter the body and is ground-breaking in the field of digestive cancers.
The machine, which is not only a diagnostic tool to identify cancerous cells, has a cutting tool which allows doctors to remove more of these cells, reducing the likelihood of the cancer returning.
Mike Hammond, Chief Executive of QEHB Charity, said: “Although we’ve had the camera and cutting tool before, we’ve never been able to get a microscope small enough to get into the human body so the doctors can see the individual cells. We are extremely grateful for the funds raised by the Loyal Caledonian Corks which will go directly to providing care ‘over and above’ that which the NHS can provide.”
