Mavis raises over £1,000 in memory of her son

Mavis Morgan, 79, has raised an incredible £1,052 to support bowel cancer patients at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham by taking on a sponsored walk with her friend, Gloria.

Mavis decided to raise money to support bowel cancer patients after her son, Peter, passed away following treatment for the disease in October 2018. Tragically, Mavis’ husband also died of bowel cancer 26 years ago.

When speaking of her determination to fundraise for the hospital, Mavis said: “Walking is the only thing that I can do to raise money. I can’t sing or dance but I can walk, and I enjoy it. I’ve got arthritis but it’s the best thing for it, by walking I can raise money to help someone else. You always need money, particularly for cancer research, and I wanted to remember Peter through a walk.”

Mavis walked from Selly Oak, up the canals, into the centre of Birmingham, with her friend Gloria. The two met each other as Peter worked with Gloria’s husband. Thanks to the generosity of their friends and family the pair raised £1,052.

Mavis said: “It was a beautiful day, it was a lovely walk and the weather was glorious. I had done sponsored walks with Peter in the past, after my friends lost their son to pancreatic cancer.”

Cathryn Worth, Fundraising Manager at QEHB Charity, said: “Our thanks go to Mavis and Gloria for their fundraising efforts. It is a wonderful way to remember Peter, and the money that they have raised will help to leave a lasting legacy and will allow the Charity to provide the best care possible for bowel cancer patients at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham.”
