Mother donates £5,513 for YPU in memory of her son.

Claire Brown recently gave the generous donation of £5,513 to go to the Teenage Cancer Trust Young Person’s Unit after her son, Callum Brown was treated there.

Teenage Cancer Trust Young Person’s Unit is a ward that is solely dedicated towards young people aged 16 to 24 who are being treated for different types of cancer. With the help and the support that the Charity receives, it is able to provide TCT YPU with ‘added extras’ such as such as Xbox games, DVD’s, books and providing a specialist education teacher.

Callum was 17 when he first arrived to TCT YPU on 9 April 2018 where he was diagnosed with sarcoma. Sarcoma is an exceptionally rare form of cancer that starts in tissues like bone or muscle. During Callum’s time on the unit his mother Claire said: “The added extras were really good and made the horrendous journey for him a little more bearable. The Charity-funded fan in his room was an absolute god send as his temperature was so up and down. On the days that he could eat, the pizzas really cheered him up! And when his little sister came to visit they would play board games together.”

Sadly, Callum passed away on 22 September 2018. Despite their tragic loss, the family continues to work with QEHB Charity to raise funds and hope all TCT YPU patients benefit and enjoy the extras that the NHS funds are unable to provide.

Claire set up a JustGiving page to raise funds for her Charity Abseil that also coincided with her birthday with an aim to raise £100 for each year of Callum’s life making the target £1,700. In total, thanks to the generosity of family members, friends and strangers who were moved by Callum’s story, Claire raised £2,500. The money was then more than doubled by a donation from Phoenix Group in Wythall. Phoenix Group matches pound for pound, up to a maximum of £2,500, in support of UK registered charities close to their colleagues’ hearts. In total this made the final figure just over £5,500 including GiftAid.

Roisin Mooney, Fundraising Officer at QEHB Charity said: “On behalf of the Charity I would like to say a huge thank you to Claire and the company Phoenix Group for raising a phenomenal £5,513. This money will ensure that the young people on our ward are given the very best equipment and facilities that are over and above what the NHS can provide."
