Music star comes to QEHB to brighten up patients’ days

Musician Gordon Giltrap, most famous for the 1970s hit Heartsong, played for patients in the Cancer Centre at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham last week. A former patient at the hospital, having had surgery in May 2016, wanted to use his musical talent to give something back.

Gordon said: "The care that I received whilst at QEHB was world class. Having been in the Cancer Centre myself, I know that it is a stressful and scary time. I hope that today I've made people's experience a little easier."

Gordon played for over an hour and the music was appreciated by staff and patients alike. Helen Preston, Senior Sister who works in Oncology Outpatients said: "We are very grateful to Gordon for coming along and playing today. It's always great when former patients want to give something back, Gordon is a wonderful musician and I'm so glad that he came in to play for us. “

Now that he is well on the path to a full recovery, Gordon is now able to turn his attention back to his music. He said: "Whilst I was undergoing treatment here at QEHB I thought that my music career was probably over. However I've recorded a new album called ‘The Last of England’ which was released at the beginning of the year and comes out on vinyl on 18 July. My time in hospital was a life-changing experience and I've really enjoyed coming back and playing here today."
