Nurse runs half marathon to raise money for her department at QEHB

Suzanne Vickrage, a Neuroendocrine Tumour Clinical Nurse Specialist at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham, is running a half marathon to help support her team in funding studies and trials.

A half marathon has always been on Suzanne’s bucket list so she decided that with the SimplyHealth Great Birmingham run coming up, it was the perfect time to cross something off of her bucket list and fundraise for her department at the same time.

Suzanne said: “I felt this was a good opportunity to raise funds, achieve one of my personal goals and hopefully enjoy the experience!

“I have only ever ran a 10k and that was a huge achievement for me, so 13 miles is a bit daunting! I am determined to hopefully run the whole distance and will continue to focus on my training.”

The Neuroendocrine Tumors (NETs) team at QEHB are dedicated to fundraising and this isn’t the first event they have taken part in. At the beginning of September, members of the team climbed Mount Snowdon to raise money for the research.

Sophie Carroll, Fundraising Officer for the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham Charity, said: “I wish Suzanne good luck on her half marathon journey, it isn’t easy but with her determination I’m sure she will be fine!

“The money that is raised from the half marathon will go towards the NETs team and their aim to be able to fund some more trials and studies which will help more patients who are diagnosed with these cancers.”

NETs are rare cancers and the team at QEHB are looking at future trials and studies to find a cure and how we can prevent these cancers. It can cost approximately one million pounds to fund a single trial or study.

If you would like to help Suzanne and the NETs team with their fundraising, you can donate to the JustGiving page here.
