Patient party to celebrate VE Day

Elderly patients on the Trauma ward at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham enjoyed an afternoon of tea, cake and conversation as they celebrated VE Day, with support from QEHB Charity.

Assistant Nurse Practitioner Amy Rogers, with help from a few colleagues, organised the party to bring patients together as they joined the nation in celebrating 70 years since the end of the Second World War in Europe.

The party took place at the weekend on ward 412 and was supported by the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham Charity.

Amy explained: “We invited all the patients as well as their relatives to celebrate VE Day.

“Everyone that came had lots of party food, drinks and cakes and spent hours singing and sharing stories of VE Day with each other and their families.

“Patients that had been quiet and withdrawn were suddenly chatting to each other, and people we have been struggling to encourage to eat and drink were asking for second helpings.”

Michael Tivey, Fundraising Officer at QEHB Charity, said: “We are delighted that the charity was able to make a difference to patients by providing food and drink for the party, and would like to thank Amy for her creativity and for approaching the charity for help.

“This is a great example of how QEHB Charity can support patients at the hospital by funding those ‘added extras’ that make a real difference to patient care.”

Amy added: “We’d all like to say a big thank you to QEHB Charity for supporting us in this; it was massively appreciated by everyone involved.”
