Prostate cancer survivor prepares to set off in the steps of Dick Whittington

Peter Bache, owner of Birmingham-based property company European Valuations, was diagnosed with prostate cancer in February 2017, and after receiving chemotherapy at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham, is now in remission.

Now, Peter has turned his mind towards giving something back to the hospital that treated him and on Friday 27 April will be setting off on a ‘Dick Whittington Walk’ that will see him walk from Gloucester to the City of London alongside friends and family. Peter said: “It was a huge shock when I got the diagnosis because I didn’t have any symptoms, the care I received at QEHB was great and I really wanted to give something back.”

The walk will be raising money to support QEHB Charity’s prostate cancer appeal and will see Peter and his keen group of fundraisers begin walking in Little Shurdington in Gloucester, walking through the Cotswolds, Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire before arriving at Mansion House in London on Friday 4 May.

Speaking of the difficulties posed by the challenge, Peter said: “The route is difficult at points, on the first day we will be climbing 2,000 feet over the Cotswolds hills and will be averaging 16 miles a day, but I am confident that I’ll be able to do it, especially with so much sport to spur me on.”

Peter has so far raised over £44,000 and is hoping to raise even more, saying: “I am amazed at how well the fundraising is going already, but unfortunately so many people know somebody who has been affected by cancer, so I think it’s a cause close to a lot of peoples’ hearts. I am going to split the funds between QEHB Charity and Prostate Cancer UK, both of which are fantastic charities.”

Cathryn Worth, Fundraising Manager at QEHB Charity said: “Peter is an inspirational fundraiser, he has thrown himself into this event with incredible energy and has raised a fantastic amount of money. On behalf of everyone at QEHB Charity I wish Peter and his friends and family the best of luck for the walk and I look forward to joining them in London for the final day of the walk.

“QEHB is at the cutting-edge of research into prostate cancer and is passionate about raising awareness of the condition and how to spot the signs early. Thank you to Peter and everybody who has already signed up for the walk, the funds will help keep the hospital abreast of the latest research and continue to provide added extras, over and above what the NHS can afford.”
