RAF Benevolent Fund continues support of Fisher House

The RAF Benevolent Fund is continuing its generous support for Fisher House, the home away from home for military patients and their families at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham, with a grant of £10,000.

The RAF Benevolent Fund has supported RAF families since its foundation in 1919, and has awarded £10,000 to support Fisher House for the fourth year in a row. This grant will fund the Halton Room, one of the eighteen bedrooms in the house, over the coming year.

Since opening in 2013, Fisher House has hosted over 5,000 people, including over 500 Royal Air Force personnel and family members, giving them a space to call home. This has meant that the families have been able to stay together in a supportive environment, free of charge.

The Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham is the base for the Royal Centre for Defence Medicine, and is the receiving hospital for all of the UK’s military personnel. So whether they are injured in combat or training, or require treatment for cancer or even a transplant, personnel from across the UK military family are treated here in Birmingham.

Paul Hughesdon, Director of Welfare and Policy at the RAF Benevolent Fund, said: “The RAF Benevolent Fund is here to support RAF families through their toughest times, like when caring for a family member in hospital. For more than 100 years the Fund has been the RAF’s oldest friend, always there in their time of need, providing financial, emotional and practical support. We are delighted to award another grant, allowing Fisher House to continue providing this vital support to RAF personnel.”

Justine Davy, Head of Fundraising for the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham Charity, said: “On behalf of all of our families at Fisher House I would like to thank the RAF Benevolent Fund and all of its supporters and donors for this grant.

“The support that we have received over the past four years from the Fund has allowed us to provide the very best for our families, giving them a place to call home whilst their loved ones are being treated.

“This grant means that we can fund the Halton Room at Fisher House for another year, helping to keep families close together during their time of need.”

Fisher House relies entirely on the generous support of its donors and supporters each year. You can find out more about the house, and donate, here.
