Renovated garden at Heartlands proves a hit with patients

A garden for elderly patients at Heartlands Hospital, that was renovated thanks to the Therapy Team at the hospital and with support from the hospital charity, is proving to be immensely popular with staff and patients alike.

The warm and sunny weather over recent months has enabled elderly patients at the hospital to go outside and enjoy the fresh air and beautiful surroundings that the garden has to offer. The garden has also enabled staff members to put on events for their patients, such as the Royal Wedding party that they held to mark the big day.

Patients on the ward were treated to refreshments courtesy of Marks and Spencer, and also enjoyed a Royal-themed quiz and a slice of wedding cake. The tea party also helped to support the 'Eat, Drink, Dress, Keep Moving' initiative that is being promoted across the hospital.

The initiative promotes the importance of nutrition and hydration, as well as moving about and getting dressed to improve patient recovery and wellbeing. Bernie Goodburn, who works in Elderly Care at Heartlands Hospital, said: "It is often the case that when patients are in hospital, they stay in their pyjamas or hospital gown until they are discharged, and can spend up to 70% of their time lying in bed.

"We know this can be detrimental to their health and wellbeing and we aim to host regular events within our department to support the 'Eat, Drink, Dress, Keep Moving' initiative."

Sian Averill, Fundraising Manager at Heartlands Hospital Charity, said: "I am delighted that the renovated Elderly Care Garden is proving to be such a hit with patients at Heartlands. I'd like to say a huge thank you to the Therapy Team who put a lot of hard work and effort into renovating the garden. The hospital charity was proud to support the renovation by providing new garden furniture, and is also keen to support the important initiative to get patients up and about."
