Ross runs 10k for his best friend’s mum

Ross Moran has recently raised over £1,000 for the lung cancer fund at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham Charity by tackling the Simplyhealth Great Birmingham 10k.

A self-confessed running newbie, Ross said: “I’d never run that far before, I’d done a couple of 5km park runs but I thought I’d go for the 10km!”

Despite it being his first run of that length, Ross completed the challenge in an impressive time of 56 minutes 15 seconds, and was ‘over the moon’ to have finished in under an hour.

Ross was inspired to run by his friend Andrew, and his mum Jenny. Andrew is Ross’ best friend, and the two have known each other for 25 years, having met as four-year-olds.

Andrew’s mum Jenny was sadly diagnosed with lung cancer nearly two years ago, and has since undergone chemotherapy and radiotherapy at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham.

Ross said: “I wanted to give something back to the hospital where Jenny has been treated. She’s been so positive throughout her treatment, and we’re still hoping for a positive outcome.

“I wanted to raise awareness of the fantastic work that they do at QEHB and to recognise the care that they give to her.”

Ross raised an incredible £1,150 for the lung cancer fund, and raised the money thanks to his friends and family, his colleagues at Patisserie Valerie and other local businesses. He said: “I’m really chuffed to have raised so much, I set out to raise £500 so to have raised over double that is amazing.”

Last year, Andrew took on the 10k run, and also raised money to support the lung cancer fund within QEHB Charity. Andrew said: "From seeing the good work that the Charity does for patients both young and old, them being treated and personally with my mom, I felt I had to give something back when I raised money by doing the Birmingham 10k last year. Ross has took this on this year and raised a brilliant amount of money for a charity that I know makes a massive difference to patients and their families"

After the run, Ross enjoyed a well-deserved beer with his friends, and is considering continuing his running efforts in the future, hoping to take on a half marathon later in 2019.

Roisin Mooney, Events Fundraising Assistant at QEHB Charity, said: “A huge well done to Ross for completing the 10k and raising such an incredible amount of money! The funds that he has raised will allow us to continue to provide ‘added extras’ for cancer patients at the hospital, helping to make their time at QEHB as comfortable as possible.

“We are proud to fund research that could change the way that cancer is treated, helping not only patients in Birmingham, but across the country.”
