School pupils raise money for cancer ward

A group of kind-hearted pupils from Lichfield Cathedral School have raised £1,090 to support patients on Ward 19, the dedicated cancer care ward at Heartlands Hospital. The pupils have been busy with a wide range of fundraising activities over the past year, and recently made the trip to Heartlands Hospital to present the cheque to staff on the ward.

The pupils were inspired to raise money for the ward thanks to one of their classmates, Kathryn Kreuser, whose mother was treated on Ward 19. Each term, pupils at the school organise a charity day to raise as much money as possible for a nominated charity.

Following some fun and inventive fundraising ideas including nail painting, a make your own slime stall and ‘pin the coffee cup on the teacher’, the pupils managed to raise a phenomenal £1,090 to support patients on Ward 19.

A group from years five and six made a visit to Heartlands Hospital, where they met Manos Nikolousis who is the Consultant Haematologist who works on Ward 19, and Kathy Holder, Sister for Ward 19. Also there on the day was Kathryn’s mum Philippa, whose treatment was the inspiration for the fundraising.

Sian Averill, Fundraising Manager at Heartlands Hospital Charity, said: “Huge thanks goes to the amazing pupils at Lichfield Cathedral School for their fantastic fundraising feats! The money that they have raised will enable Heartlands Hospital Charity to continue to provide ‘added extras’ for Ward 19 that will help to make the hospital experience more comfortable for patients.

“The hospital charity is proud to support the incredible work of the doctors and nurses on Ward 19, and we are always delighted to be able to purchase new items for the ward such as comfortable chairs for patients and visitors, or world class blood analyser machines to improve the treatment that the patients receive.”
