Staff member raises money for the hospital as part of her healthcare mission

Olga Leach-Walters has worked in the endoscopy team at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham since 2011 and is fundraising to help provide added extras for patients who are treated on her department.

Olga is heading off to South Africa to take part in the Ten Thousand Homes Project, where she will be using her medical knowledge to promote healthcare in an orphanage and in the community, teaching children about the basics of healthcare. Olga previously trained as a dental therapist and so will also be imparting her knowledge about oral health to the people in the communities that she will be visiting.

As part of her efforts, Olga is raising money to support the trip, but wanted to also raise money for the hospital where she works. She said: “Previously, when patients came into the endoscopy department, they were a little cut off. There’s no signal in our area, so patients had to leave the ward in order to contact their relatives and friends.

“Thanks to the Charity, the free Wi-Fi has changed this completely. Patients can talk with their friends, keeping them up to date with their progress, as well as access social media and even watch their favourite TV programmes. Overall it has made our department a friendlier place to be.”

Rob Williams, Fundraiser at QEHB Charity said: “The Charity’s thanks go to Olga for her hard work within the hospital, and for her fundraising for the hospital charity. Thanks to the kind donations of the Charity’s supporters, we have been able to provide important ‘added extras’ for patients, such as the free Wi-Fi.

“It is always fantastic to have the support of members of staff like Olga, and everyone at the Charity wishes her the very best for her trip to South Africa.”
