Stroke survivor climbs Snowdon to raise money for hospital that saved his life

Around 40 Staffordshire businesspeople have raised over £8,800 in sponsorship by climbing one (or more!) mountains to raise money for Heartlands Hospital that saved the life of a Peter Robinson.

Insurance broker Peter Robinson, Managing Director of Prizm Solutions Ltd in Tamworth suffered a severe stroke last year that almost cost him his life. Thanks to the excellent care he received during his time at Heartlands Hospital, Peter was extremely fortunate to recover well, and was so grateful he pledged to raise money for the Heartlands Hospital Charity as his way to thank them for saving his life.

Peter explains: “I owe my life to that hospital, so I am on a mission to help them. A few of the guys in the office volunteered to do the Three Peaks Challenge to raise money for Heartlands Hospital Charity. Whilst I’m lucky enough to be able to live a relatively normal life after my stroke, I knew I’d not be physically able to tackle the three peaks, but instead vowed to walk up one to do my bit too.”

When Peter mentioned walking up Snowdon to business colleagues, he was astounded at how many of them wanted to join him on the challenge. So, whilst three Prizm Solutions employees undertook the Three Peaks 24-hour Challenge (climbing Ben Nevis in Scotland, Scafell Pike in Cumbria and Snowdon in Wales), around 40 other employees travelled to Wales and joined Peter in a sponsored walk up Mount Snowdon.

The Snowdon walkers, who varied in age and ability from 16 to 68 years, started doing training walks together a few months ago, to prepare themselves for the challenge; they were also accompanied by a special four-legged friend named Darwin the Cockapoo.
Peter said: “It was really hard going, as on the day we battled torrential rain and howling winds on the mountain, but we did it! Not only that, but we smashed the sponsorship target we’d set, as initially we said we’d like to raise £5,000. I’m delighted with what we’ve achieved, and totally humbled by the amount of people who’ve joined in and helped, either by walking or sponsoring or assisting in some other way.”

Sian Averill, Fundraising Manager for Heartlands Hospital Charity said: “I cannot thank the team at Prizm Solutions Ltd enough for raising such a substantial amount of money towards our Stroke Unit. This donation will ensure that the charity will be able to provide our stroke patients with Therapist Tilting Space Chairs that will allow patients to sit independently, spending more time sitting up and out of their beds. As well as the Tilting Space Chairs the donation will also allow the charity to purchase Lateral Tilting Mattresses that automatically turn patients throughout the night so that nurses do not have to wake patients every four hours during the night to manually move them. On behalf of the charity I would like to say a huge thank you to everyone that took part.”
