Support Fisher House to keep families together this Father’s Day

As Father's Day approaches we are reminded of the invaluable support provided by Fisher House to allow military families to celebrate occasions such as these together.

Fisher House was built in 2013 at a cost of £4.2 million, with grant funding from Help for Heroes and American charity Fisher House Foundation.  It serves as a ‘home away from home’ for military patients and their loved ones just minutes from the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham. Its mission is to provide free, comfortable accommodation for the families of wounded and severely ill troops and veterans. It has 18 en-suite bedrooms and guests can stay for as long as they need to; allowing kids to be close to their dads on this important day.

Dave Watson, Patient Advocate and former Fisher House resident said: “I have recently become a new dad, again, and I remain so grateful for the support Fisher House gave me when I was injured. Fisher House allowed me to have my family with me when I needed them, and QEHB Charity makes it possible to keep families together in their time of need.”

Mike Hammond, Chief Executive at QEHB Charity which runs Fisher House, said: “Fisher House was built with families in mind, and it is on days like Father’s Day where the ability for kids to be with their dads is particularly important. We are thankful to everyone who continues to fundraise so tirelessly.”

Claire Barnes, Head of Grants at Help for Heroes, said: "Families have a hugely important part to play during their loved one’s recovery and we recognise how essential it is that they receive practical support. Father’s Day is a time when the support network for those who have suffered life-changing injuries is so valuable. Fisher House is helping to overcome the life challenges that Britain’s military families sometimes face and Help for Heroes are proud to be a partner and supporter.”

Since opening, Fisher House has provided over 13,000 nights of free accommodation, saving guests and estimated £1,000,000 in travel costs.
