Support Fisher House to keep families together this Mother’s Day

Mother’s Day is upon us and at this time of year especially we are reminded of the invaluable support provided by Fisher House to allow military families to celebrate these occasions together.

Fisher House is a ‘home away from home’ for military patients and their loved ones just minutes from the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham. Its mission is to provide free, comfortable accommodation for the families of wounded and severely ill troops and veterans.

Fisher House was built with families in mind and as such has plenty of family-friendly facilities- including a play-area, cinema room and bedrooms with space for the little ones to sleep comfortably.

Justine Davy, Head of Fundraising at QEHB Charity which runs Fisher House, said: “Families are going through an incredibly stressful ordeal; Fisher House enables them to be away from the clinical environment but still within walking distance of the hospital, where their loved ones are receiving treatment. In the house there is a large communal kitchen where military families can share stories and support one another and the dedicated staff at Fisher House keep the fridge well-stocked with bread and milk, so the kids can show their appreciation this Mother’s Day with some well-earned breakfast in bed for Mum. The house keeps Mums, Dad and kids together.”

Since opening, Fisher House has provided over 13,000 nights of free accommodation, saving guests and estimated £1,000,000 in travel costs.

Claire Barnes, Head of Grants at Help for Heroes, said: “Families have a hugely important part to play in the recovery process and we recognise how essential it is that they are involved from an early stage. We are delighted to be working in partnership with the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham Charity to enable families to be together while they begin to rebuild their lives.”

To donate £25 to Fisher House and provide a night of free accommodation to the family of an ill or injured soldier or veteran, please visit www.fisherhouseuk.org or call 0121 371 4852 for more information.
