Team of incredible hospital staff to take on epic walking challenge for Dementia Awareness Week

Phil Hall, who works in the elderly care team at Solihull Hospital, is pulling on his boots and doing something incredible to mark the start of Dementia Awareness Week.

Phil will be taking on 25.5 mile walk on Sunday 20 May that will see him begin his walk at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham, walking to Good Hope Hospital in Sutton Coldfield, before walking a further eight miles to Heartlands Hospital, before walking the final six miles to Solihull hospital.

The walk will be a great physical challenge for Phil, and he is using the event as an opportunity to raise awareness of dementia, whilst also raising money to support the elderly care team at Solihull Hospital where he works.

Phil said: “As the dementia lead for Solihull Hospital, I thought that I had to really throw myself into dementia awareness week and do something very different to raise money for elderly patients at the hospital. I thought that it would be a great idea to walk between the four hospitals that make up the hospital trust. Luckily the walk is mainly along the lovely canal network so it’s fairly flat throughout!”

Samantha Howell, Fundraising Manager for Solihull Hospital Charity said: “Phil is an inspiration. Not only does he work tirelessly in his job, supporting elderly patients and patients with dementia at Solihull Hospital, he is going ‘over and above’ to raise money to support the elderly care team by walking a really long way!”

When talking about the challenge, Phil said: “I’m really looking forward to it, and I’m hoping that people are able to come along on the day to walk a leg of the journey with me, keeping me company and helping to boost everyone’s spirits. More importantly, I hope people will consider donating so that patients with dementia are even better cared for at Solihull Hospital.”
